Asthma and Respiratory Diseases
Asthma is the narrowing of the bronchial airways. It varies in intensity over periods of time. The bronchii are small tubes which carry air in and out of the lungs. Certain substances such as dust, pollen, animals, cigarette smoke can irritate them and trigger the narrowing and therefore an attack.

When the bronchii are irritated, the airways narrow as a protective measure - thus making it difficult to breathe causing wheeziness and coughing. People with COAD (Chronc Obstrructive Airways Disease) have an irreversible obstruction.
Asthma causes are not fully known, and are believed to be a combination of genetic, environmental factors. Asthma often runs inthe family, so a Claimant may have a propensity to asthma long before being exposed to the factors in the environment.
A distinct type of occupational asthma can happen afte a massive inhalation of chemicals - reactive airways dysfunction disease - RADS.
What can be done to reduce the risk of Occupational Asthma ?
- Try to get any causes removed or replaced with a safer alternative;
- Your employer would have to see if they can risk assess and reduce the risk by installing extractor fans;
- Isolating you from the process - (by placing chemicals in a cupboard for example;
- Providing you with breathing equipment to stop you inhaling;
- You should try and raise the issue with the Health and Safety Representative;
- Tell your manager and/or contact the HSE/Environmental Health Department;
- Inform your Doctor that you think the asthma was caused at work;
- Tell your manager / safety rep and ask to record your complaint in the "accident book" - don't be "fobbed off" by the argument that this is not an "accident".
