Suffering with Mesothelioma

Suffering with Mesothelioma

Mesothelioma is a (fortunately) rare form of cancer caused by exposure to asbestos. Cancerous cells develop in the mesothelium - which is the protective sac that covers many of the body's internal organs - and the thin membrane that lines the inner surface of the chest wall (where it is known as the pleura) and abdomen (where it is known as the peritoneum).

Mesothelioma therefore has different names, depending on where it affects. Most cases start though, in the pleura or the peritoneum. It is also called 'malignant' or "diffuse" mesothelioma.

Signs and symptoms of people suffering with mesothelioma.

Some of the symptoms of Mesothelioma are:

- Difficulty in breathing/wheeziness
- Fever
- Weight Loss
- Chest pain

Early Mesothelioma symptoms tend to be general and so unfortunately they are often ignored or misdiagnosed.

What Occupations are Affected?

Because Asbestos was widely used in many industries till the late 1970s, and sometimes even later, some employers did not provide adequate protection or take measures to prevent exposure.

Between 40-60 years after the exposure to asbestos, a person may develop lung cancer or mesothelioma. Mesothelioma takes approximately 1,800 lives a year and like asbestosis, is unfortunately expected to rise.

This is a non conclusive list of occupations known to have put workers at risk of asbestos exposure:

- Painters/Decorators
- Electricians
- Coach Constuctors - Railway Workers
- Engineers
- Power Station Workers
- Laboratory Research
- Asbestos Manufacture and Sales
- Seamen
- Dockers
- Laggers / Sprayers
- Mechanics
- Joiners/Carpenters
- Pipe, Boiler and Heating Workers
- Shipbuilding/Shipyard Workers
- Construction / Demolition Workers
- Plumbers / Gasfitters
- Roofers

Compensation for Industrial Disease - What is it Worth?

Compensation for industrial disease - especially if you are or know someone who issuffering with mesothelioma may seem a difficult and unseemly matter to some people, for a terrible disease. How do you put a figure on receiving a diagnosis of cancer? People suffering with mesothelioma don't make a claim for themselves - but usually their family. Life expectancy for the condition is generally between 6 and 18 months. The victim will also know the condition is fatal and that his/her life expectation is severely limited.

The JSB Guidelines establish a range for people suffering with mesothelioma of between £52,500.00 to £81,500.00. To assist, the following description is provided:

"The duration of pain and suffering accounts for variations within the bracket. For periods of up to 18 months, awards in the bottom half of the bracket may be appropriate; for longer periods of four years or more, an award at the top end".
